Beta Blockers may increase diabetes
risk
Beta blockers are pills commonly prescribed for people with high blood pressure. They
are supposed to lower the risk of heart disease. However, a new study has found that
taking them may significantly increase a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that people
taking the drug are 28% more likely to develop diabetes than those whose blood pressure
was not treated by drugs.
The study was conducted by Dr. Todd W. Gress and others from Johns Hopkins University
in Baltimore and involved 12,550 adults ages 45 to 64.
