Joint Legislative Day to feature top government leaders

A powerful lineup of legislators and government officials has been scheduled for the first-ever Chiropractic Coalition Joint Legislative Day, April 29, in Washington, D.C.

Scheduled to appear during the morning session are:

Sen. Ted Kennedy, the ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee and a member of the Armed Services Committee. Kennedy is an influential voice on health care issues and one of the most popular legislators in the Senate.

Rep. Chris Smith, Chairman of the
House Veteran Affairs Committee.
Rep. Smith is a 20-year member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee and is thoroughly familiar with the programs administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the issues facing America's veterans.

Rep. Ed Schrock, member of the House Armed Services, Budget, Small Business, and Government Reform Committees.  Rep. Schrock introduced HR 3476 that will make chiropractic healthcare services and benefits a permanent part of the TRICARE program for covered beneficiaries and specify that chiropractic services can be provided only by a doctor of chiropractic.

Rep. Donald Manzullo, a long-time chiropractic advocate in Congress. Rep. Manzullo chairs the Small Business Committee and has held hearings into Medicare reform. He introduced HR 2560, which would eliminate many of the Medicare problems faced by chiropractors.

Anthony J. Principi, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, whose recent decisions on the role of chiropractors in the VA health care system were guided by recommendations of the VA Chiropractic Advisory Committee.

Additional Speakers will be announced as they are confirmed.

The afternoon will be reserved for the Coalition Luncheon Conference, which will focus on chiropractic education issues. Tentatively scheduled is John Barth, director of accreditation for the U.S. Department of Education’s office of postsecondary education.

During the day, doctors – either singly or in state contingents -- will meet with their legislators to discuss important chiropractic issues such as pending  or proposed legislation.

All events will take place in the Gold Room (Room 2168 on the first floor of the Rayburn House Office Building at the Capitol).

In the evening, The World Chiropractic Alliance will host a special Coalition Reception at the Marriot Hotel (1331 Pennsylvania Avenue) Garden Terrace Room.  Everyone will be invited to step forward and make a statement about their dedication to chiropractic and their pride in the Chiropractic Coalition.

There is no charge for participation in any Legislative Day activity! (The ICA is providing Box Lunches for $10 each).

"This special day of united effort will help chiropractors set legislative policy that will guide the profession for years ‑‑ perhaps generations ‑‑ to come. What we accomplish on this day will make a difference to chiropractic." -- Terry A. Rondberg, D.C., WCA President

"This event is about influencing policy makers, not trying to impress each other. Our entire emphasis is on the effective mobilization of hundreds of D.C.s, students, C.A.s and family members on behalf of key legislative initiatives, such as HR 3476, the new TRICARE initiative." ‑‑ Michael S. McLean, D.C., ICA Legislative Committee Chair

"All chiropractors who want to insure that vertebral subluxation remains the focus in chiropractic need to support the Coalition's efforts and should attend Legislative Day. This will go a long way in confirming that we represent mainstream chiropractic." ‑‑ Gary Horwin, D.C., FSCO President
